Blue footed boobies are fascinating little birds that live on tropical and subtropical islands like the Galapagos. The bright blue color of their webbed feet is a result of their diet.

It is also a sexually selected trait meaning individuals with the brightest feet have higher reproductive success than their less fortunate brethren.

You might be thinking this is a peculiar sexual preference but the pigmentation of their feet is actually a good indicator of a booby's health. Carotenoids, a chemical partly responsible for this distinctive blue color, are also an antioxidant that boosts their immune system.
